Run your fingers over the text to hear the story and touch any word to hear and see it spoken and spelt. You can even colour in pages of the story and record your own voice. Hear the barking dogs and the ferocious yowl of Scarface Claw, all part of the interactive experience, giving children and parents’ hours of fun. This is not only a marvellous story, but a superb aid for early learning and literacy development.

It was thirty years ago that a small black dog stepped out of the imagination of author and illustrator Lynley Dodd and onto the pages of a picture book. This book, Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy, is now famous the world over and the 20 titles in the Hairy Maclary and friends series have now sold more than six million copies worldwide.

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy combines simple narrative storytelling with virtuoso use of rhythm and rhyme, and Dodd’s gentle but energetic watercolour illustrations depict characters that are as well loved as they are mischievous.

Latest reviews of Hairy Maclary app for iPhone and iPad

Good for children learning to read
App Stability: 3 stars out of 5 App Usefulness: 4 stars out of 5 I have a 3 year old daughter who is a great Hairy Maclary fan. We have all the books and the audio CD. The application is read a good slow pace for a child learning to read. The words are highlighted as the narrator reads the story. Your child can stop the narrative and select individual word repeatedly to the extent that you can be driven mad. For some reason my daughter loves the word from. 20 minutes of "from" does eventually result in the iPad being removed from daughters hands. :D The app also allows your child stop and colour the pictures with a built in paint program. The original colouring or the new colours from your child can be displayed. While the painting is somewhat primitive it does engage a 3 year. My daughter picked up the operation of the app quickly and switches between the painting and the narrative on the fly. I do sit and help her understand the association between the words and the narrative but she can and does use it by herself. On a negative note the app has crashed a bit more than expected However all my iPads crash more than expected. So nothing new. N Side note: For you Doctor Who fans, the narrator is David Tennant the Tenth Doctor. He is an excellent animated narrator and read the story with his Scottish accent. My daughter is use to rolled rs so the accent is not a problem. But some children unfamiliar with the accent may have problems
Good, but more expensive than it should be.
Its an engaging, but very simple childrens story. The ability to hear each word alone is nice, but unfortunately the narrator had to put space between each word to make this possible, so the narration is not flowing. Its not horribly stilted, but its noticeable and does detract from the story.
Hairy maclary
....dont waste your money until the issues with this app are resolved. It doesnt work with the new ipad operating system. this information can be found on the developers website...very frustrating....and should not happen with an expensive app like this one.
Fantastic
My kids have loved this! My son who doesnt like to read spent over an hour playing with the book, then recorded himself reading the book. this really helped him learn about his pace and inflection. It is a great learning tool. I do wish it came with a few more word-based activities....something to do with content.
Classic
You cant go wrong with Hairy Maclary and David Tennants narration fits perfectly with the way we always read it growing up. This is a must have for any digital library.
